Welcome to my neighborhood!  I am looking forward to getting to know each and every one of you this year.  We are going to learn lots about personal finance and the world around us in the coming months.  We will have a few laughs along the way as we learn more about your current finances and prepare for the future, when you will be making lots of money!

I.  Course Objective:

Personal Finance is a course designed to inform students how individual choices directly influence occupational goals, future earning potential, and long term financial well-being.  We will learn about credit, borrowing, saving, and investing.  This course will help prepare you for the real world of managing your finances.

II. Things You Will Be Provided:

1.  Textbook

2.  A well-prepared, caring, fair, and humorous teacher who will challenge and strive to inspire you.

3.  Other course materials(worksheets, handbooks, and course modules).

III. Things You Will Need:

1.  A notebook/binder (all notes, vocabulary, quizzes, and assignments will be kept here and checked periodically).

2.  A writing utensil.

3.  Loose leaf paper (lots of it!).

4.  A good attitude and an open mind!

5.  A simple calculator.

IV. Classroom Policies/Procedures:

1.  This classroom will abide by the policies set forth by the Tennessee Department of Education, the Shelby County School Board, and the administration of Germantown High School.

2.  Everyone will be treated with dignity and respect.

3.  In an effort to promote good citizenship, current events will be discussed and social issues examined.  Classroom discussions will be civil and respectful!  Every student should feel comfortable participating and sharing their viewpoint.

4.  CELL PHONES ARE NOT TO BE SEEN/HEARD/USED IN MY CLASS except with permission from the teacher.  This should not be a problem since you will be so mesmerized by my teaching you will not even think about what your friends are doing or tweeting!

5.  The late bell is a deadline…not a warning.  You will be counted as tardy if you are not in the room when the bell rings.

V. Grading:

1.  Your grade for a nine week period will be comprised of a combination of the following:

A.  Unit Tests (roughly every 6-10 days)-Usually worth 100 points (The test questions will consist of material covered in the textbook, lectures, readings, assignments, vocabulary, bell ringers, and notes.  These tests will include a variety of questions including true/false, matching, short answer, multiple choice and essay.  Keeping a good notebook will be a key for success in this class!)

B.  Notebook Grades (roughly every 6-10 days) - Usually worth 100 points

C.  Mini Quizzes -10-25 points each

D.  Projects/Group Work -10-100 points each

E.  Writing Assignments -25-100 points each

2.  We will also complete a research paper in this class (1-2 pages) that will be due sometime near the end of school.  We will work on this paper in class and you will work on it at home as well.  Do not panic!  I will help you and guide you through this.  We will check your progress periodically to make sure you are on track.  More detailed instructions are to come later.

3.  In the event of an absence you are responsible to make up work.  Work that is not made up will result in poor notebook grades, and poor test grades.  Makeup tests will be scheduled at a time convenient to teacher and student.

4.  Turning your work in late is not acceptable!  Be prepared to receive a low grade, or even a ZERO, for late/missing/lost/forgotten/ignored work.

VI. Rules:

  1. The most important rule:  DO NOT TALK WHILE I AM TALKING...THIS WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE AND SWIFT DISCIPLINE OF BIBLICAL PROPORTION!

  2. Bring something to write with and something to write on EVERY DAY!

  3. Do not get up out of your seat without permission!

  4. Do not mess with my stuff!

  5. No Cell phones/earbuds...ever!

VII. Assistance/Meeting/Problems:

  1. I will make every effort to keep you on track with assignments/grades.  I will make contact with parents/guardians when appropriate concerning grades, missed assignments, and any unlikely discipline problems.

  1. I am usually at school by 6:30 a.m. if you need to see me before school.  Please feel free to come to me with questions and concerns.  Parents can contact me at school by email.
